Protocols
for the Placement of Temporary Restorations
The Maine State Board of Dental Examiners recognizes the
unique position of the Independent Practice Dental Hygienist and the Public
Health Supervision Hygienists in serving the citizens of Maine.
Within the accepted scope of practice of dental hygiene is the ability
to place temporary restorations in compliance with the protocol adopted by the
Board. It is important to note that not
all carious lesions are candidates for temporary restorations. The protocols, available below, include the
algorithms used to determine the appropriateness of the placement of a
temporary filling.
